Presenter(s): Katrin Klingenberg, Co-founder, Passive House Institute US Tex McLeod, The McLeod Associates Type: On Demand Air Date: 3/4/2011 Air Time: 1:00 PM Duration: 1 Hour 11 Minutes 8 Seconds
Passive House and zero energy homes are made for each other. Together they can overcome our definitive environmental design constraint and help builders meet the 2030 challenge - energy efficient, carbon neutral homes at a cost of little more than current standard construction practices. Join Tex and Katrin as they explore ways to optimize the building envelope and mechanical systems utilizing a consistent measurable energy metric. With 'solar ready', the house is fully completely prepped for a small and ever more affordable renewable system for the remaining electrical loads, typically a 2-3 kWh PV system, that now puts carbon neutrality within reach of the average North American family.

Presenter(s): Peter L. Pfeiffer, FAIA, Principal, Barley & Pfeiffer Architects Type: On Demand Air Date: 3/3/2011 Air Time: 3:15 PM Duration: 1 Hour 7 Minutes 1 Second
Let's take a look at energy efficiency and green building from a more cost effective approach—that of making smart DESIGN choices. We have designed, built, and sold 'net-zero energy' between 2004 and 2010. Why have some succeeded and others not? Green 'BY DESIGN' pays, however, a reliance on 'EcoBling' and the latest green gizmos doesn't. Too often we get wrapped up in questionable strategies while trivializing the importance of sound design, or we suffer from the 'check list' approach to green building advocated by product suppliers and green rating consultants and lose sight of the bigger picture regarding conservation of resources. The complexity of how design decisions and component selections interact to effect health, durability, and conservation of resources in such a way that appeal to the home buyer will be addressed in an enlightening format.
